Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the ability to contest particular rulings made by the official, following the protocol already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of reviews a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
