A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” stated the head of state.
The official reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its duties in national infrastructure. They were built at an rapid pace, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an prompt suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was suggested pending a full technical review. The party stated that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."
In reply, the president maintained that the train had been operating in full compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
