The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
